Macrotron has released
to production DDR (Double Data Rate) SDRAM (Synchronous
Dynamic Random Access Memory) Modules in the standard 184-pin
DIMM (Dual Inline Memory Module). These modules include the
64MB, 128MB, 256MB, 512MB, and 1GB with both 64 bit and 72 bit (ECC)
words operating at 266MHz. In order to meet these clock
frequencies Macrotron uses 266MHz memory devices from major
brand suppliers. This clock speed results in a 2.1 GB/second
module data transfer rate.
DDR SDRAM is an evolutionary
new technology derived from the widely used SDRAM technology.
The future success of DDR is the high performance gained by
being able to perform two data operations in one clock cycle.
DDR has twice the throughput of standard SDRAM; hence Double
the Data. The evolution of DDR on top of standard SDRAM offers
cost benefits since manufacturers will use existing wafer fabs,
processes and tester technology. The other benefit is that
time to market with production devices has been expedient.
Macrotron has embraced the DDR
SDRAM modules as the most logical and cost effective approach
to providing the next generation memory for its customers. The
DDR increases memory bandwidth by clocking data on both the
rising and falling edges of the memory clock, while
maintaining the low latency of standard SDRAM (Single Data
Rate). The DDR module implementation used simulation and
verification to ensure proper timing requirements and signal
integrity in the design. This follows the JEDEC defined
184-pin unbuffered DDR SDRAM DIMM product per JEDEC standard
JESD21-C, section 4.5.10.
The DDR modules are well suited
for a broad range of applications. Initially the workstation
and server markets will be served where the high speed can
enhance the performance of these markets. Major trade news
sources have reported that the DDR format will eventually be
used in the high volume, cost sensitive, PC market over the
competing Rambus architecture. The primary reason is that
there is a reported large price premium for the Rambus module
with little or no performance improvement over the DDR module.
DDR provides a cost-effective,
high-performance main memory solution that requires minimal
development and manufacturing investment while at the same
time maintaining a cost structure consistent with standard
SDRAMs.
Macrotron's DDR SDRAM modules
are manufactured with the same dedication to quality and high
